Job Posting Guide

SIGMOD Home | FAQ | Job Posting Guide

The fundamental rule for posting a job advertisement in the dbjobs system is that it must be database-related.
For example, a job opening for a Java programmer should not be posted in the dbjobs system, unless the position requires experience with database systems, e.g. asks for JDBC. Similarly, an academic position with "Computer Architecture" as the only area of interest should not be advertised on dbjobs, although academic positions without explicit focus on database systems are considered ok. Job postings are moderated and will not be published if they are not database-related.

The email address of the user posting the job advertisement must have the same domain name with the employer's URL.
Since it is impossible to verify the accuracy of all submitted job advertisements, we cross-reference the employer's URL with the job poster's email address (which was verified through the registration process). They must match in order for the job posting to be published in dbjobs.

Note that the email address of the user posting the advertisement is not displayed and can be different from the email contact info that is listed on the job posting. For example, if your email address is alan@turing.com, you can post a job advertisement for www.turing.com (although you cannot post one for www.acm.org), but can list alan_turing@yahoo.com as the email contact info.

Employer Type Classification (academia, industry, etc)
In order to help job-seekers in the search process, job advertisements must include classification information for the type of the employer. There are six types:
  1. Academia, for universities and colleges.
  2. Goverment, for positions within the goverment, when they do not fall into any of the other categories. For example, a job for the US Department of Commerce should be listed as Goverment, whereas an opening at a public, state-funded university should be listed as Academia.
  3. Industry of any type, except in the special case of a Research Lab or a Start-up.
  4. Research Lab, even if it is part of an industrial employer, or it is goverment-run.
  5. Start-up, for new, recently-founded companies.
  6. Other, if the employer does not fall into any of the above categories. For example, non-profit organizations.

Classification for Employment Type (permanent, temporary, etc)
Job advertisements must also include classification information for the type of employment. There are five types:
  1. Permanent, for permanent positions. Tenure-track positions at Academia fall into this category.
  2. Temporary, for short-term positions, when they do not fall into the other categories.
  3. Contract, for temporary positions created to fulfill a specific task.
  4. Post-doc, for short-term researh positions for "fresh" PhD graduates.
  5. Internship, for summer positions, typically in the industry, for students.

Type of Position Classification (development, research, etc)
To help job-seekers in the search process, job advertisements must include classification information for the type of the specific position advertised. The duties for each position can fall into one or more of the following categories:
  • Development
  • Management
  • Research
  • Teaching
Please choose all that apply for the advertised position. For example, an academia position typically involves Teaching & Research, whereas a position in a Research Lab usually involves Research & Development.

How to handle multiple job openings
If you want to post multiple job openings, you have two choices:
  • If the jobs are similar (e.g. several tenure-track positions at a university), then you simply have to mention the fact at the job description text.
  • If your company has multiple job openings for different types of positions (e.g. database administrator and database researcher), then you will have to submit multiple job advertisements.
